Charity Description
Mission: To provide innovative education, support and opportunities to help people realize their potential
Program or Service: Through its nationally recognized Charter High School and highly successful AmeriCorps/YouthBuild programs, AYW is able to assist young people between the ages of 16 and 25 in achieving high schoool diplomas and learning valuable job skills that can provide opportunities for future personal successes. In addition to its education and work programs, AYW offers comprehensive services to meet the personal needs of its clients. These services include counseling, health care, career preparation, and assistance in linking to child care, transportation, and other community-based social services. During a fiscal year AYW serves approximately 600 students. Of those students, 53% are male, 47% are female, 45% are Hispanic, 35% are Anglo, 19% are AFrican American, and 0.18% are from other ethnic backgrounds. Approximately 60% of the AYW clients come from economically disadvantaged family situations.

During a fiscal year, approximately 120 young people participate in the AmeriCorps/YouthBuild traiing program at American YouthWorks. The program includes three areas: the Environmental Corps (E-Corps), Casa Verde Builders (CVB), and Computer Corps (C-Corps). Through these programs, participants have opportunities to learn teamwork, leadership skills, communication skills, and specific job skills that will benefit them throughout their lifetimes. In addition to receiving a modest living allowance and health insurance while in the program, each participant has the opportunity to receive an educational award based on the term of service that can be used
to pay for college, graduate school, or vocational training.
Outcomes: The American YouthWorks Charter School breaks the walls of the traditional classroom to engage high-risk, at-promise youth in applied learning through service to the community. As a fully accredited public high school, AYW's focus is to recover youth who have dropped out of school, are at risk of dropping out, or who are seeking a different way of learning. Our goal is to motivate youth to complete high school and become productive citizens. Our quest is to inspire and retain individuals who have, in the past, experienced little success. AYW is the first charter school in the country named as a National Service Learning Leader School. Our educational design emphasizes Service Learning and project-based education, bringing the students into full participation in solving the problems that face our communities today. In 2000, the State Board of Education approved a ten-year renewal of the Charter School contract and raised the enrollment cap from 250 to 750 students per year.

Through the Environmental Corps (E-Corp) program, participants contribute to the restoration and preservation of our parks and public lands. Included in their activities are creek clean-ups, community gardening, school presentations, tree planting and pruning, mulching, seeding, erosion control, habitat restoration, non-native plant removal, trail construction, and park maintenance. E-Corps participants have built and maintained over 100 miles of trails and parks in our community. E-Corps has won several awards for its contributions and efforts in the areas of environmental education and park improvement, and has partnerships with numerous public and private entities, including Travis County Parks, City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, Lower Colorado River Authority, Austin Parks Foundation, and Texas Forest Service.

The Casa Verde Builders Program (CVB), gives participants opportunities to learn construciton skills while building affordable single-family houses in East and South Austin for families who otherwise might not be able to own a home. In addition to addressing the need for low-income housing in Austin, the CVB program also allows participants to be in the forefront of developing construciton projects that rely on new, innovative alternative products that result in more environmentally sound and durable homes. The homes built by the CVB crews are highly energy efficient and inexpensive to operate, consistently earning the highest energy ratings from the City of Austin Green Builders. CVB has partnerships with numerous public and private entities, including the City of Austin, Habitat for Humanity, the Austin Association of Professional Firefighters, and Home Depot.

Through the Computer Corps (C-Corps, participants serve as teachers of technology within the Austin community. The members volunteer at our Community Technology Centers (15 locations) and other community partner sites located throughout Austin. They can assist with online job searches, accessing the Internet, designing web pages and refurbishing/recycling computers. C-Corps members have trained over 1500 people and were chosen by the Austin Chronicle as the "Best Bridge Over the Digital Divide" in October of 2001. C-Corps has partnerships with many public and private entities, such as the Corporation for National Service, the U.S. Department of Education, YouthBuild USA, Housing Authority of the City of Austin, Austin Area Urban League, Austin FreeNet, Guaranty Financial Systems, Dell Computers, IBM, Legerity, Pervasive Software, and others.

Events Hosted: 1) American YouthWorks Corporate Golf Challenge - a golf tournament held annually in either September or October
