Charity Description
Mission: The mission of the Austin Children's Choir is to nurture and develop Austin-area children from diverse backgrounds in the joys and discipline of high-quality choral singing, music education and performance; offer a curriculum of varied repertoire including classical, popular and multiculturaL music; and to enrich Austin's musical scene with the unique children's choir sound.
Program or Service: Austin Children's Choir is a non-profit organization, founded in 1986 by Dr. Bernard Gastler and Concordia University as a gift to the community. The Choir provides third through eighth grade boys and girls from the Austin area with a refined choral experience and enriches the Austin music scene with the unique spectrum of sound that only a children's choir can produce. Performance opportunities include annual Fall, Holiday and Spring concerts as well as singing at retirement centers, benefit events, children's festivals and productions with other community based arts groups. Singers have also made special appearances throughout Texas and the U.S. while on tour. In July of each year the Choir sponsors a camp that isto the community. Any child, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or national origin, is eligible to audition for choir membership.
Outcomes: Austin Children's Choir believes that the arts teach self-discipline, perseverance, critical thinking and flexibility. We strive to teach our children to have character and a sense of themselves. We want them to be able to follow through on whatever they are asked to do with discipline and commitment, whether that's doing the household chores or mastering the art of choral music.

The choir reflects the diverse population of Austin, with caucasian, hispanic, asian and African American members. Our members come from all areas of Austin as well as Round Rock, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Dripping Springs and Del Valle.
One of our future goals is to establish a satellite program that would enable us to reach areas that are underserved in the arts.
Events Hosted: The 1999-2000 Season included the following performances:
Summer Camp with guest clinician Cynthia Bradford,
The Voice of Jewish Life, A Holocaust Remembrance Concert,
Mozart Requiem with the Austin Civic Chorus,
Works by Bach Festival sponsored by the Austin Civic Chorus,
Texas Environmental Excellence Awards presented by Governor Bush,
and seasonal concerts on October, December, March and May.
The Choir is currently planning a tour to the International Children's Choir Festival in London and Canterbury, England in July, 2001.
