Charity Description
Mission: to lead in cultivating an environment where the performing arts flourish
Program or Service: •ARTS INCUBATOR and UMBRELLA SERVICES for performing arts startups.
•PLAYFEST, annual festival of children's theater for school groups and families
•CURTAIN CALL, monthly performing arts newspaper for members (3000 copies) with audition, job, class info and event calendar
• AUSTIN LIVE and CALLBOARD, weekly email updates to above for members and subscribers
• B. IDEN PAYNE AWARDS, annual theater industry awards event honoring excellence in Austin theater
• REGIONAL AUDITIONS offering performers a means of showcasing their work for directors and castin people in Austin
•TALK THEATER
New drop out prevention program using special theater techniques in schools
•BIG TICKET GIVE AWAY. Promotional program to attract new audiences to all the theater in Austin. Ballet, opera, symphony, theaters, dance troupes and eateries all participate.
NETWORKING AND INFO SERVICES Via our memberhip in APASO (national Assoc of Performing Arts Service Organizations) and Theatre Communications Group, we are able to provide our members, especially organizations, all kinds of useful info on how things are done in other cities to benefit the arts.
ADVOCACY. We meet regularly with city and state gov't reps, and business members, to advance the cause of the performing arts and arts learning programs for children.
Outcomes: •ARTS INCUBATOR: our 'grads' include Austin Musical Theater, Salvage Vanguard Theater, VORTEX, rude mechanicals, and Frontera — to name a few. This has been a very successful means of bringing new theaters and groups to Austin - that stay and contribute well!
PLAYFEST: Close to 5000 children come to the theater to see plays each year through this program. Included are children who are blind, deaf, and at risk kids who might not otherwise come to theater. Many of the performing troupes have also benefitted in that they are now on school rosters and go regularly to perfomr in schools. But they too started with Playfest. The program is over 10 years old.
•PAYNE AWARDS
This year will mark our 28th year of doing these awards. They do wonders for the marketability of shows and performers and are highly prized.
• CURTAIN CALL. In addition to being the performing arts lifeline to many in our Austin community, the paper offers wonderful volunteer opportunities to young journalists who are thrilled to be regularly published. A UT grad and a St. Ed's grad currently create the bulk of the material.
TALK THEATRE. NEA funded this program this year so that we could build a curriculum guide. ACC will partner with us next year to help us take the program to teachers so that more teachers can learn how to do this.
