| Mission: | To assist families in enriching the lives of their children through a comprehensive program of quality early education and care, and on-site family services. |
| Program or Service: | Austin Community Nursery Schools offers full day, year-round, nationally accredited childcare and family support services for children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years. There are two schools in Austin - one is in south Austin across the street from the Meadowbrook Apartments (an Austin Housing Authority Development), the other is located in the Walnut Creek Business Park in northeast Austin.
Priority is given to low-income families who are working, in school, or job training programs. Care is offered on an income-based sliding scale for families who are income-eligible.
Priority is also offered to childreen of teen parents remaining in AISD diploma programs (at no cost to the parent); children under the auspices of Child Protective Services; and families transitioning from crisis.
On-site family services are provided for case management, community referrals, play therapy, and counseling. Children are provided a strong Health and Nutrition Program including a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and PM snack; semi-annual health screening (physical, vision, hearing, and iron-level testing) at no cost to the parent.
A comprehensive parent education/involvement component is an integral part of the overall program.
ACNS offers program quality matched by only 5 other child care centers in Austin/Travis County. Only 8% of child care in our area is considered high quality by nationally recognized quality indicators. |
| Outcomes: | A longitudinal study by a UT doctoral candidate showed that children who had attended ACNS showed higher subsequent academic acheivement than their classmates. Former ACNS students had better developmed prerequisite skills for math, and language arts, including increased attention span,ability to focus, listen, and follow directions, and problem solve. Additionally, parent involvement in the education of these children was rated higher than that of their counterparts. These are the necessary ingredients for academic success. |
