Charity Description
Mission: The Austin Jazz Workshop's mission is to inspire young people to realize their creative musical potential by participation in school band, orchestra, and choir programs. We maintain that music is a gift given first to oneself, then to others. Our outreach to at-risk youth serves as one more voice urging them to make positive life choices in order to realize their greatest hopes and aspirations.
Program or Service: The Austin Jazz Workshop is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to jazz performance and education in Austin public schools. The group does assembly performances and classroom workshops at each campus visited.
The AJW performs for an estimated 35,000 elementary-school children annually, before an audience that is 50% Latino, 27% Anglo-American, and 23% African-American. The group performs for an estimated 15,000 priority youth each year.
Outcomes: The Austin Jazz Workshop is conceived as a pre-emptive strike aimed at keeping young people out of gangs. By joining positive school musical groups available to them at the sixth-grade level, students give themselves a sense of pride and belonging--two important things that can carry them all the way to graduation day.
Events Hosted: The Austin Jazz Workshop's debut CD recording, "Take to the Sky", was officially released in August at the St. Cecilia Jazz Festival. All proceeds from the sale of this recording will fund future school performances. The CD can be obtained at record stores all around Austin, and by mail-order. The recording features thirteen of Austin's finest jazz musicians performing 54 minutes of music by Gershwin, Ellington, Jobim, and many others.
How to Donate: Donations to the Austin Jazz Workshop can be mailed to P.O. Box 3741, Austin Texas 78764.
You can also help by purchasing the CD through the same address. The cost is $15 per CD.
