Charity Description
Mission: Austin Musical Theatre, Inc. (AMT) was founded in 1996 with the mission of providing Broadway-quality musical theatre production and training to Central Texas.
Program or Service: In addition to full-scale, Broadway-quality musicals presented to audiences of more than 50,000 annually, AMT offers year-round instruction in all aspects of musical theatre for ages five through adult.
Austin Musical Theatre’s accomplishment is in maintaining the art of musical theatre for traditional as well as new audiences. We do this by working with professional Equity and non-Equity artists presenting work that is a reflection of the best in musical theatre, and offering training for future artists. Our Performing Arts Academy also provides a valuable resource to the City and its residents by creating an educational environment that supports our young people in the exploration and development of their talent, self-expression, and place in the world.
These two broad categories—entertainment and education—support each other, with productions featuring performers of all ages who have trained with Austin Musical Theatre, and adult cast members and guest artists teaching in AMT’s Performing Arts Academy. The productions also inspire others to explore interests in musical theatre training and performance. In addition, by offering musical theatre entertainment and training of the highest caliber, AMT seeks to provide Austin with a cultural resource on par with other major American cities.
AMT has received Best Musical Awards from the Austin Critics Table and B. Iden Payne Awards, and has produced the three top-grossing local productions in Austin history. The company is slated to join the Austin Symphony, Austin Lyric Opera and Ballet Austin as the fourth resident company in the new Long Center for the Performing Arts,ng in 2004, where we can offer the musical theatre tradition to an even larger audience.
Outcomes: Austin Musical Theatre strives to establish a nationally recognized cultural environment for Austin residents as well as visitors to the state. Austin Musical Theatre’s goal of producing Broadway-level musical theatre leads us to work with outstanding artists and designers from Austin and around the country, bringing national attention to our work. Audiences from Austin and beyond are responding positively; of our total audience, 77% are City of Austin residents, 18% from beyond the city limits but still within the metropolitan statistical region, and the final 5% are from beyond that, including Dallas, Houston, New York, Los Angeles, and other cities.
Austin Musical Theatre gives away over 4,500 free tickets annually, including 1,000 for each production to schools that bring students to see daytime outreach performances. Other organizations receiving free tickets include the Girl Scouts, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Good Friends Social Club for mildly retarded young adults.
A wonderful aspect of Austin Musical Theatre is our commitment to children. Our Academy offers a variety of classes for young people in voice, tap, jazz, ballet, and acting. AMT provides a comprehensive training ground in musical theatre with its Junior Company, a group of 45 singer/dancers between the ages of 9 and 17 who perform in the Austin community at such events as the Zilker Trail of Lights, holiday parties at the Continental retirement home, theng of the Children’s Hospital expansion, and a Helping Hands benefit at Palmer Auditorium. Austin Musical Theatre’s summer workshop provides ample opportunity for creativity with training in all aspects of musical production culminating in an all-student musical production.
Events Hosted: Austin Musical Theatre produces three mainstage shows annually and one summer youth production as well as the year round training provided by our Performing Arts Academy.
