| Charity Description |
| Mission: | Breakthrough's mission is to empower young people to take responsibility for their own education and the education of others. The program provides economically disadvantaged Austin ISD students, starting in sixth grade and continuing through high school graduation, academic challenges and support in a safe and positive environment. At the same time, Breakthrough encourages young adults to consider careers in education by giving high school and college students the opportunity to be educators, leaders, and mentors. The program objectives are twofold:
1) To develop the academic skills and self-confidence of economically disadvantaged Austin ISD students so they succeed in school and go to college;
2) To encourage outstanding high school and college students to pursue careers in education. |
| Program or Service: | Six-week academic summer sessions; after-school academic enrichment; ongoing mentoring; academic guidance and advocacy; college-prep activities; teacher training |
| Outcomes: | Austin's Breakthrough program is based on a successful national model (Breakthrough Collaborative, formerly Summerbridge). At established Breakthrough programs, 86% of students go to college, compared to approximately 25% of their peers. In addition, 73% of the young people who teach at Breakthrough pursue careers in education. |
