| Mission: | BCRC provides a centralized source of Breast Cancer information, education, and emotional support, so that women may become active, knowledgeable participants in their healthcare. |
| Program or Service: | · Helpline (512/472-1710): Call for information, support, and referrals to community resources.
· Peer Support: We match clients with breast cancer survivor volunteers to provide relevant information and support throughout diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.
· Breast Cancer Support Groups: BCRC sponsors support groups for newly diagnosed survivors (in cooperation with the American Cancer Society) as well as groups for those living with advanced breast cancer.
· Lending library: Over 800 books, audio & video tapes can be checked out of our lending library.
· Educational Programs: are offered on issues of interest to breast cancer survivors and their loved ones.
· Educational Publications and Community Awareness Projects: Speakers Bureau, Breast Cancer Handbook, web site (www.bcrc.org)
· Minority/Medically Underserved Outreach Project: Brings our services out to patients who need them. |
| Outcomes: | The BCRC was created by breast cancer survivors and is a place to which women can turn immediately upon finding a lump or at any point after diagnosis. We offer a safe, supportive environment to help deal with
the emotional and physical rigors of diagnosis and treatment: access to information on what to do next; contact with other women who have been through the same experience; information on diagnosis, treatment and support services available in the Austin area; and books, materials, and research about breast cancer and treatment options. The services of the Center are also available to family, friends, and other members of personal support systems. |
