| Mission: | To provide opportunities for low-income persons, aged 60 or over, to give supportive person to person service in health, education, welfare or related settings, and to help alleviate the physical, mental or emotional problems of children having exceptional or special needs. |
| Program or Service: | The goals of the Foster Grandparent Program are to: 1) enable low-income persons aged 60 and over to remain physically and mentally active and to enhance their self-esteem through continued participation in needed community services. 2)enable at-risk children with either exceptional or special needs to achieve improved physical, mental, emotional, and social development, thereby helping them to reach social, behavioral, developmental, and education goals. 3)provide a stipend and other benefits which enables eligible persons to participate as Foster Grandparents without cost to themselves. |
| Outcomes: | Since 1967, Austin's Foster Grandparent Program has provided valuable aid to children and youth with special and exceptional needs. Foster Grandparents serve in schools, hospitals, juvenile detention centers, Head Start centers, child care centers, and other community based sites. Among their diverse assignments, Foster Grandparents help children who have been abused, neglected, or are otherwise at-risk; mentor troubled teenagers and young mothers; care for premature infants and children with physical disabilities; and teaching reading to children who are falling behind their grade level. Foster Grandparents serve in Austin, Lockhart and Manor. |
| Events Hosted: | The Foster Grandparent Program's Advisory Council hosts an annual Rock-a-Thon to raise funds to honor the FGP volunteers at an annual recognition ceremony. The Rock-a-Thon also promotes community awareness of the program. |
