Charity Description
Mission: The March of Dimes is the leading voluntary health organization dedicated to saving babies.

Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.

For 60 years, the March of Dimes has carried out this mission through programs of community services, advocacy, scientific research and education of the public and health professionals.
Program or Service: With an annual investment of more than $60,000 in the Central Texas area, March of Dimes community grants have provided:

 an innovative neural tube prevention and folic acid education program for the public and for health professionals.

 a public awareness, education and enrollment assistance program for the Texas Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

 a program to educate the public about Shaken Baby Syndrome and to prevent infant mortality.

Advocacy

The March of Dimes is committed to maintaining an active, well-respected, non-partisan presence in the political arena.

Chapter advocacy networks led the successful efforts that enacted the 1998 Birth Defects Prevention Act to expand CDC activities and worked to create a pediatric research initiative at the National Institutes of Health.

At the national and state level, the March of Dimes is a leader in the effort to implement the new State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Education

March of Dimes healthy pregnancy and birth defects information has helped to educate Central Texas, including health professionals through:

 Babies and You - A prenatal health promotion program for the workplace.
 Comenzando bien- A bilingual prenatal health program targeting the Hispanic community.

 The Folic Acid Campaign- a national and local campaign to educate women regarding the benefits of folic acid in the prevention of neural tube defects.
 The Resource Center - a toll-free information line used by Central Texans each month (888-MODIMES).
Scientific Research

Outcomes: In 1999-2000, the March of Dimes invested more than $37 million for over 300 grants to scientists seeking causes, treatments and prevention of birth defects and prematurity.

Projects include:

 The Perinatal Epidemiological Research Initiative to determine causes of preterm delivery.

 The gene vector grants to develop effective delivery systems to replace absent or faulty genes, thus correcting many birth defects.

Unfinished Business

Although the March of Dimes has made great strides in improving the health of mothers and babies, we have a long way to go. In an average week in Texas,*

6,423 babies are born

1,014 babies are born to teen mothers

466 babies are born low birthweight

41 babies die before their first birthday

Events Hosted: WalkAmerica: Now in its 31st year of celebration, WalkAmerica was the first Walk event created for the fight for irth defects.

Star Chefs of Austin: Held in the fall, Star Chefs attracts premier chefs from the Central Texas Area who offer dinner pacakages for guest in an exciting live auction. A silent auction also is a part of the event. Over the past three years, Star Chefs sell out the tables for an extraordinary night of food sampling, and entertainment at the Four Seasons Hotel.
