| Mission: | The mission of Connections Resource Center is to improve the quality of early education and care of our community's children by providing information, education, and resources to individuals who have the greatest impact on children during the critically important formative years -- parents, caregivers, teachers, and community leaders. |
| Program or Service: | On-site Services/Lending Library
o a lending library of activity and curriculum materials, early childhood education materials, toys and games, parent education books, books on child development, and instructional videos and audio tapes
o an easy-to-use, computerized card catalogue of all Connections' materials
o a bulletin board of current parenting, teacher-training and community resources
o a clearinghouse of newsletters, journal articles and pamphlets
o a job bank and resume file for teachers, directors and parents
o a workshop for parents and teachers (jigsaws, die-cutting, laminating and sewing machines)
o classroom and meeting space for parent, teacher and community groups
o a "recycle center" of free materials for home or classroom use
o individualized technical assistance available to all patrons of Connections.
The Community Outreach Project consists of several interrelated components, including the following:
o Parent Outreach reaches over 3000 parents through a number of projects: the CityWide Parenting Series, which provides 400 free parent workshops community wide coordinated or facilitated by Connections; the CityWide Parenting Series Schedule, which is compiled, printed, and distributed month; the Austin Parent Groups Directory, a listing of parent support groups and affinity groups; and Celebration of Families, the city’s annual parenting fair, also coordinated by Connections’ staff;
o Resource Center on Wheels takes books, toys, educational materials, and technical assistance to child care programs throughout the community, with a priority for those located in high-risk, low-income neighborhoods;
o Training Wheels takes books, toys, educational materials, and technical assistance to child care programs participating in the CCMS (Child Care Management System) in Austin and the 10-county rural area surrounding Austin;
o C3 Project, which builds on Connections’ Mentor Teacher Program, provides child care programs with on-site training in child development, classroom management, developmentally appropriate practice, training for individual teachers, and workshops for the staff as a whole;
o Starfish Training Series provides child care teachers with training workshops on topics realted to developmentally appropriate teaching practice;
o TeleTeacher/TeleParent phoneline, which enables parents and child care providers to have their child development and parenting questions answered by child development experts.
