| Mission: | The mission of Ecology Action is to educate and empower people to create a healthier environment by reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling. |
| Program or Service: | Ecology Action is one of the oldest organizations in the country dedicated to recycling and other conservation issues. Ecology Action was founded in 1970 as an all-volunteer group that sought to promote several different environmental initiatives, most notably recycling. Today, the nonprofit organization operates a drop-off recycling network in six Central Texas counties that accepts glass bottles, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, aluminum and steel cans, aluminum foil, office paper, junk mail, cardboard, paperboard, and plastic bottles. Ecology Action also provides job-experience and community-service opportunities for at-risk-youth and people with disabilities. The organization promotes awareness of solid waste and environmental issues, serves as a community environmental resource, and continually works to develop new strategies to promote conservation within the state of Texas. |
| Outcomes: | * Established Austin’s first recycling center, 1970.
* Initiated Austin’s first workplace recycling program, 1980.
* Initiated the publication and distribution of the Austin Environmental Handbook, 1980.
* Developed a curbside recycling program in conjunction with the City of Austin, 1982.
* Began Texas’s first major Landfill Diversion Center program, 1986.
* Began Texas’s first plastics recycling program, 1989.
* Built Texas’s highest volume recycling collection center, 1992.
* Developed and implemented Texas’s first coordinated rural recycling network, 1993.
* Hosts the annual Austin Earth Day Festival since 1993.
* Developed and implemented the first full-service drive-through recycling center in Texas, 1995.
* Was honored as 1997 Employer of the Year by the City of Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities.
The populations served by Ecology Action are people who live in apartment building with 100 units or less, small business owners, youth-at-risk, people with disabilities, and people needing to do community service. In addition, Ecology Action provides access to those willing to recycle more than the items collected by the City of Austin’s curbside pickup.

| Events Hosted: | Ecology Action hosts Austin’s annual Earth Day Celebration (held in April). Austin’s Earth Day is host to thousands of citizens from Central Texas who come to learn about ways to better their community and environment. In addition, Ecology Action organizes activities for Texas Recycles Day and holds a Holiday Party for our members. |
