| Charity Description |
| Mission: | Girlstart, founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas, is committed to educating and empowering girls in math, science and technology. National studies show that girls' interest in math and science decreases as their grade level increases. Girlstart combats this trend by providing high-quality, high-impact programming, designed to teach girls that math and science are relevant to their lives. The agency offers after-school programs in Texas schools, free Saturday camps, and summer camps onsite at Texas's first Girls Technology Center. In addition, our website, www.girlstart.com provides fun contests and games, interesting articles, and great resources for parents and teachers! |
| Program or Service: | How can a girl become a computer programmer if she does not have access to a computer? How can she aspire to be an engineer if she never sees a woman succeed in this field? What opportunities do girls have when only one in five of them believe they are good at math and science?
Girlstart is committed to empowering kids in math, science, and technology. Programs like Girlstart deliver the kind of educational opportunities essential for girls to succeed in the 21st century. Girlstart is the first step to attract girls to math, science, and technology subjects. It can make a tremendous difference in girls pursuing these courses in middle school, high school and beyond.
This is important because despite the growing demand for a skilled engineering and technology workforce, women still hold only 12 percent of the nation's lucrative science, engineering, and technology jobs. Experts agree that in order to close this gap, girls must be provided with role models, mentors, extracurricular programs, and training to show them the connection between technology and its real world uses.
Girlstart bridges this divide by providing after-school, Saturday Camp, and Summer Camp programs at the Girlstart Tech Center. These programs give a diverse group of girls and their parents hands-on learning in math, science, multimedia and engineering concepts.
|
| Outcomes: | Girlstart programs are attended by a diverse group of girls including traditionally underserved communities in Texas. The schools Girlstart serves have minority populations ranging from 60%-96%, while the percentage of students classified as economically disadvantaged ranges from 40% to 90%.
At Girlstart we are making it possible for these girls to grow up empowered and strong, able to choose a path through life that stirs their intellects and their hearts. We prepare girls to enter the larger worlds of high school and college with all of their optionsand with a firm belief in their own ability to achieve in math, science, engineering, or technology.
