| Charity Description |
| Mission: | Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity, a Christian-based organization, develops opportunities for all of God's people to act out their faith. By working in partnerships to eliminate substandard housing, we enable families and volunteers to improve lives. We create hope by building homes, strengthening neighborhoods and reweaving communities. |
| Program or Service: | Building Homes with Volunteers teaches skills, teamwork, committment,
community and makes all of us better people in the process.
|
| Outcomes: | Over 110 homes built
Nearly 4,000 volunteers come each year to help build homes
Having the correct tool to perform the job at hand is essential to our mission. Far too many families struggle without an adequate home to raise a family. In many cases, children’s health and safety are a daily cause for concern. Habitat gives qualified families, living in substandard housing, an opportunity to build and buy a safe and sturdy home. The investment of “sweat equity” volunteer hours by each Partner Family increases their appreciation for home ownership while imparting the knowledge to help maintain a home. Additional training in budget management, and routine maintenance helps to ensure the long-term success of Partner Families. The eventual access to equity funds makes possible college educations and ongoing home improvements.
The volunteer house building experience teaches skills, teamwork, commitment, community, and makes all of us better people in the process!
Habitat for Humanity welcomes all people to build with us in partnership, and provides an opportunity for people of all ages to put their faith, love of humanity, or simple desire to do good work, into action. We bring diverse groups of people together to make safe, affordable housing and better communities a reality for everyone.
1990 census data indicates that 12 of Cleveland’s 36 neighborhoods have poverty rates of over 50%, and in the Central, Hough, Fairfax and Kinsman neighborhoods, more than three-fourths of all families with children live at or below the poverty line! Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to helping families become successful homeowners, to giving parents a chance to create a better life for their children, and to involving the entire community in partnership. We have built homes in Central, Clark-Metro, Fairfax, Glenville, Hough, Slavic Village, Tremont, and Union Miles, while continuing our ongoing renovation of the 99-year old historic building that houses our ReStore, construction warehouse and offices.
On a typical day, church members, business professionals, union tradespeople, local high school students, central city neighbors, Americorps volunteers from across the country, partner family members, VISTA and AARP volunteers, Court Community Service assignees, and the Habitat professional staff, work together to make Cleveland a better place to live!
