| Mission: | The mission of the Heritage Society of Austin is to ensure the preservation of our diverse community's architectural and cultural past for present and future generations. |
| Program or Service: | The Heritage Society of Austin specifically serves its membership and generally serves the greater Austin area and Travis County. As a nationally recognized preservation organization founded in 1953, we protect the diverse architectural and cultural heritage of the greater Austin community. HSA is a proactive leader with local, state, and national policy makers and organizations ensuring that preservation is at the forefront of the public policy agenda. Backed by an effective team of board members, staff, volunteers and sponsors, our goal is enable all parts of the community to have an active role in ensuring that Austin's unique past is part of our shared future.
HSA produces an annual Heritage Homes Tour which showcases the interior of historic homes and buildings in specific neighborhoods in Austin. This very public educational event is just one of our efforts to involve the community in preservation. An elementary school preservation curriculum has been created titled "A Gift From the Past," which is available for check-out by local teachers. A REALTOR preservation training program is also set to begin in the Fall 2000.
HSA also produces an annual Preservation Awards ceremony to recognize individual and institutions for their visionary approach to preservation and long-time commitment to maintaining Austin's heritage as well as recognizing idividuals who have fostered preservation through outstanding craftsmanship and adaptive reuse of historic structures.
The Heritage Society also continues to support Pioneer Farm, a living history museum that depicts life in Central Texas in the 1870s.
Also annually, the Heritage Society conducts a study tour to different historic areas of the country. This year in October, a group will be going to Historic Charleston. |
| Outcomes: | HSA has made grants and loans of over $2.8 million for restoration, preservation, education, and other enhancement projects in Austin. The Austin History Center, the State Capitol (Governor's Reception Room), the Driskill Hotel, the Governor's Mansion, Paramount Theatre and the Laguna Gloria Art Musuem are only a handful of buildings and historic Austin landmarks that have benefited from HSA funds. |
