Charity Description
Mission: The mission of the Humane Society of Williamson County is to prevent cruelty to animals, provide relief from suffering among animals; reduce over breeding of animals through public education and sterilization programs; and extend humane education to our community.
Program or Service: The Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) is a not-for-profit 501 © (3) organization and has long been dedicated to the well being of animals. Located on 27 acres in Leander, Texas since 1979, HSWC has provided a place to house over 70,000 lost or abandoned animals from Williamson County.

The Humane Society is the largest animal shelter in Williamson County and the largest nonprofit animal shelter in the region. Each year 7,000 lost or abandoned animals are delivered to the facility. An average of 2,500 animals are adopted to good homes and currently almost 2,000 low cost spay/neuter are provided for local residents. Most importantly HSWC provides a safe haven for pets that are lost by residents of Williamson County and Round Rock.

HSWC is andoor shelter and accepts both stray and owner-released animals. Every animal is given an opportunity to be reclaimed or adopted. Over 75% of the Ѕ million-dollar budget comes from donations. Without this support the Humane Society would not exist.

The services listed below are part of the HSWC mission.

Animal Sheltering: The primary focus of HSWC is to provide animal sheltering services for Williamson County and the City of Round Rock. HSWC is andoor shelter that accepts any animal delivered by Animal Control Officers or local residents. This program provides shelter, food and water for lost, homeless, abandoned and injured animals.

Reclaim: HSWC provides a central location for residents to find their lost pets. HSWC keeps accurate records of all animals in the shelter. HSWC also provides lost and found services to help reunite owners with their pets. HSWC also has a web site that is updated weekly with pictures of shelter animals.

Adoption Counseling: HSWC provides counseling services for all potential adopters to assure that each adoption is in the best interest of both the adopter and the animal. Adopters also receive information specific to the species and breed of their chosen animal. This information is given to assure a smooth transition for the animal and the adopter.

Spay/Neuter: Every animal adopted from HSWC must be altered prior to adoption. This is not only mandated by law, it is part of the HSWC mission to reduce the over breeding of companion animals. HSWC also offers a low-cost spay/neuter clinic that isto all local residents.

Humane Education: HSWC provides humane education to school children, service organizations, businesses and civic associations. This program provides an opportunity for local residents to understand the need for spay/neuter programs; how to properly care for animals; and how to respect domestic animals and wildlife.

Programs for the Elderly: HSWC provides Pet-a-Pet Therapy for nursing home residents. Volunteers take small, gentle cats, dogs, and rabbits to visit local nursing home residents. This program has been very successful as elderly, infirm, and otherwise disabled residents relate favorably to animals. This program has also helped elderly patients with loneliness and depression.

Humane Legislation: HSWC promotes the welfare of animals through the provisions and benefits of existing laws and further supports the enactment of more extensive humane legislation. Efforts by HSWC staff and volunteers helped bring animal control to Williamson County and HSWC continues to support any legislation that is beneficial to both animals and local residents.

Wildlife Rescue: HSWC provides transportation and relocation services for wildlife. This program has been instrumental in helping save the lives of several endangered animals that have been delivered to the facility.

Community Outreach: HSWC provides community outreach programs such as off-site adoptions and information booths at festivals and other gatherings.
