Mission: Educating people about the environmental necessity, economic value, and natural beauty of native plants
Program or Service: Our major programs are: Public gardens; Environmental Education; Plant Conservation; Landscape Restoration; and National Outreach. Through these programs we provide information about regional species of native plants to gardeners, growers & professionals across North America; teach children & educators about native plants & ecosystems; host an internship program for college students; provide consultation and research in landscape restoration methods; and participate in a plant conservation program for rare and endangered plants of Texas.
Outcomes: We serve the greater Austin community; state of Texas; and north America with information, educational programs demonstration gardens. In FY 1999 we served more than 81,700 visitors; 6,540 adults in docent-guided tour groups; 4,262 children visiting the Little House on weekends; more than 5,600 children visiting as part of a school program; and more than 1100 adults participating in classes, lectures, workshops and conferences. More than 400 native plant species are included in our 15-acre display garden; the remaining grounds include wildflower meadows, wooded trails and natural areas for visitors to enjoy. We retain approximately 64% of our 22,000 membership each year. Our national outreach consistes of responses to requests for information from around the world; our website; a quarterly magazine (Native Plants); national and local events calendars; and an affiliate gardens program.
Events Hosted: Children Bloom Best in Families Festival, Bluminarias (Holiday event), Annual Wildflower Gala, Fall & Spring Gardening Festivals and Native Plant/Seed Sales; Artisans Festival; The Places We Grow Children's Festival; People and Plants Ethnobotany Festival; and Summer Serenades.
How to Donate: Mail a check to Development Office, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 LaCrosse Avenue, Austin, TX 78739. We accept general donations, corporate sponsorship of events, tributes in honor or memory of loved ones. We also provide planned giving opportunities. Membership is available on the website or by visiting the Center. The Wildflower Center is also a member of Earth Share of Texas.
