Charity Description
Mission: The mission of Legal Aid of Central Texas is to promote the dignity, self-sufficiency, safety and stability of low-income Central Texans by providing direct access to free, quality civil legal assistance and related educational
services which address the basic human needs of eligible clients.
Program or Service: What does Legal Aid do?
Legal Aid employs skilled lawyers and paralegals who provide civil legal representation and advice to people who cannot
afford to pay a lawyer. Legal Aid offers all services free of charge, but clients may be responsible for any court filing fees.
Legal Aid does not handle any type of criminal matter. Legal Aid of Central Texas offers services to low-income residents
of Travis, Bastrop, Lee, Fayette, Caldwell, Hays, Blanco, and Williamson Counties through an Austin office. Residents of
Bell, Lampasas, Milam, Coryell, Falls, San Saba, Burnet and Llano Counties are served through an office in Belton, Texas.

Why does someone who cannot afford a lawyer even need a lawyer?
Our civil legal system is how people protect their basic rights. Clients contact our offices when they need help navigating
the system. Having a low income should never be a barrier when it comes to getting help. Most of our clients are seeking
a fair resolution to problems that no one would deny deserve attention: obtaining protective and restraining orders, divorce,
child custody and support, preventing unfair evictions, probating wills, resolving benefits disputes–problems that can have
a significant and lasting impact. We do not take criminal cases, and our screening process is designed to prioritize clients
whose problems are life-altering or threatening. Our income eligible clients include hard-working minimum wage earners with
dependants, seniors and people with disabilities managing on fixed incomes, victims of crime and/or abuse who are struggling
through a difficult time–people who would never be able to afford legal assistance even when their need is desperate.

Aren’t there court appointed attorneys who serve low income clients?
In the State of Texas, court appointed attorneys are seldom available to low income clients who are not in jail or facing
criminal charges that may result in incarceration. No federal, state, county or city agency is designated to provide a full range
of civil legal services to low income clients. “Call Legal Aid” is the general answer to anyone who needs, but cannot afford,
civil legal assistance. Legal Aid is an established, respected and appreciated resource to many Central Texans. In 1999,
more than 13,000 people seeking help contacted Legal Aid of Central Texas.

What kinds of problems does Legal Aid of Central Texas handle?

How to Donate: Contributions may be sent directly to Legal Aid of Central Texas at our mailing address. LACT is working with the Austin Community Foundation to create an endowment that will support the work of our office in decades to come. Volunteer support is critical to the success of the evening legal clinics, and potential volunteers are encouraged to contact April Kubik, LACT's Volunteer Coordinator at 447-7707. Many businesses in the community support the work of Legal Aid through contributions of new office supplies that would be of use in a law office. For more information on donating supplies to our office, please call Sula Castro, Office Manager, at 447-7707. Thanks to all donors and potential donors for their interest in the work our office does in the community.
