| Charity Description |
| Mission: | Our organization was created to promote, through the establishment and maintenance of a museum and related projects, an educational program that will foster a better understanding and appreciation of the life and times of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Our primary focus is on the years he spent as a student at Southwest Texas State University, his teaching experiences in a rural South Texas school and the impact of these experiences on his subsequent role in the development of legislation in such areas as education and civil rights. No other Johnson site focuses on these formative experiences which resulted in a President with a clear understanding of the needs of those Americans suffering from either poverty or poor education; or even worse, a combination of the two. |
| Program or Service: | Our need to move ahead with the interior renovation of the building that will house this museum follows the successful completion of asbestos abatement, interior demolition and renovation of the building's façade. The exterior repairs were made possible by funds provided by the Trull Foundation, the City of San Marcos and the San Marcos Main Street Board.
To date the museum has obtained the bulk of its support from local sources, but San Marcos is not a wealthy community, and fear we are nearing the end of what we can reasonably expect from local supporters. Still, the donations from San Marcos residents have been impressive and reflect strong community support for our efforts.
The successful completion of this project will require assistance from philanthropic organizations.
We see the Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos as having a significant long-term impact on our community. |
| Outcomes: | Three distinct groups will be served by the museum’s educational activities:
Area School Children – School children from the area, including metropolitan Austin and San Antonio, will be drawn to the museum to participate in a planned day-trip program that will be patterned after other cooperating sites on the “Johnson Trail.”
Tourists – Tourists will be drawn to the museum after seeing museum exhibits at San Marcos’ outlet malls (currently the area’s most popular tourist attraction) and after visiting the other central Texas Johnson sites.
Adult Education Participants – Plans are being developed for an adult education series on “The Changing American Presidency” to be conducted in partnership with the Political Science Department at Southwest Texas State and the Friends of the LBJ Museum in Austin. Both of these groups have made commitments to work with the LBJ Museum of San Marcos board on this project.
