| Mission: | The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympians and the community. |
| Program or Service: | The Special Olympics Texas - Central Texas Area provides year-round sports training and competition in 14 sports, serving more than 1,400 athletes with mental retardation or closely related developmental disabilities. |
| Outcomes: | Participation in Special Olympics immeasurably enhances the quality of life for the athletes. Through Special Olympics, greatness can be achieved far beyond the field of competition as the movement
builds self-esteem, promotes independence, strengthens families and facilitates social competence, while encouraging fitness. And this greatness touches not only the athletes but also the volunteers and sponsors, who through their involvement have the opportunity to touch lives and "Inspire Greatness."
