| Mission: | The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympians and the community. |
| Program or Service: | Special Olympics Texas is a privately-funded organization that provides year-round sports training and competition to persons with mental retardation and closely related developmental disabilities. Across the state of Texas, Special Olympics Texas has 18 area offices that serve more than 23,000 athletes, who train and compete in 19 sports. |
| Outcomes: | Participation in Special Olympics immeasurably enhances the quality of life for the athletes. Through Special Olympics, greatness can be achieved far beyond the field of competition as the movement
builds self-esteem, promotes independence, strengthens families and facilitates social competence, while encouraging fitness. And this greatness touches not only the athletes but also the volunteers and sponsors, who through their involvement have the opportunity to touch lives and "Inspire Greatness."
