| Mission: | To bring greater independence to Texans living with physical disabilities through partnership with a working dog. To provide the dogs and training free of charge. To give abandoned and unwanted dogs renewed lives of love and service. |
| Program or Service: | Hearing Dogs alert their deaf partners by touch and lead them to a variety of important everyday sounds, including a knock at the door, a smoke alarm, an alarm clock and a baby's cry. They respond to oral and sign language commands.
Service Dogs assist physically challenged individuals byng doors and refrigerators, fetching out of reach wheelchairs, retrieving dropped items, turning lights on and off, getting help and moving paralyzed limbs. They also perform customized tasks such as assistance with clothing and specialized equipment.
THSD provides the dogs and the training free of charge.
THSD adopts all of the dogs in our program from animal shelters and rescue leagues. |
| Outcomes: | * Service Dog "Honor" names Purina "Hero Dog of the Year" for saving her partner's life when a porch swing collapsed and knocked her unconscious. Honor revived her, helped her back into her wheelchair, helped guide her back into the house, pushed the 911 emergency button and barked into the phone, alerting paramedics to the emergency.
* Service Dog "Blue" featured on Animal Planet's "Wild Rescues" for saving his parnter's life when his wheelchair turned over in a remote park.
* Baylor College of Medicine concluded a 5 year federally funded study documenting the beneifts of Service Dogs to persons with spinal cord injuries.
* Both hearing impaired and mobility challenged graduates enjoy lives of greater independence, security, social interaction, productivity and unconditional love.
THSD has rescued almost 300 dogs from uncertain futures at animal shelters. |

rain and hail cost us a few dogs - so although we registered enough walkers to break the record, we lost by a few dogs to the Brits.
