Charity Description
Mission: The Texas Hospice Organization, grounded in hospice philosophy and standards, advocates excellence in services, promotes ethical practices, and fosters education and research. It assists its membership network to provide care that enhances the quality of life for patients and their families experiencing a life-limiting illness.
Program or Service: The Texas Hospice Organization (THO) was founded in 1983 for educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954. The organization acts as a forum for education, communication, and quality care assurance for hospice care in the State of Texas and other member states as approved by the Board of Directors. The Texas Hospice Organization adheres to the standards and guidelines developed by the National Hospice Organization and any further standards and guidelines imposed by the State of Texas and other regulatory bodies. It is the only nonprofit organization in either state devoted exclusively to hospice care and hospice caregivers. THO is dedicated to promoting and maintaining quality compassionate care for the terminally ill and their families and to provide educational opportunities and professional assistance to the professionals who serve the terminally ill.
Outcomes: THO provides its member organizations throughout Texas and New Mexico other public and private health organizations; health professionals; State and Federal prisons; and the general public with information regarding changes in laws and regulations; and training in pain management, palliative care, and the psychosocial aspects of death and dying. In addition, it serves as the chief referral network resource within Texas for referrals to hospice services for individuals, their families, health professionals and other hospices throughout Texas and the nation.

This is accomplished through the sponsorship of one major multidisciplinary training conference each year (see attached) and several one day conferences offering intensive training in one discipline. To support the development of hospice within federal and state prisons throughout Texas, membership benefits and mentoring services are provided to their professional staffs without charge. The organization also provides a weekly faxed newsletter to its members. Texas prisons, selected state officials, state agencies, federal agencies and private organizations are provided the faxed newsletter without charge
Member hospices which are based in communities throughout Texas and serve the majority of counties in Texas provide the bulk of direct services to patients and their families.
Events Hosted: THO is the only organization formed to educate Hospice Professionals in the care of the dying, to include pain management, bereavement and the like. THO hosts a major annual that offers multidisciplinary educational opportunities in areas of interest to hospice professionals and volunteers. During this meeting, general sessions with nationally recognized experts in hospice and palliative care are provided as well as 40 or more breakout sessions that are tailored to the individual and professional needs of the participants

In addition to the annual meeting, THO offers hospice professionals a unique opportunity to learn from and network with their colleagues in special topic conferences. These conferences are usually designed to last no more than one day and are built around a specific topic or peer group.

Topics/Peer Groups include:
· Patient Care Coordinators
· Volunteer Coordinators
· Bereavement Coordinators
· Managed Health Care
· Focused Medical Review
Other topics are scheduled as requested or needed with four to eight scheduled per year.
How to Donate: Donations may be made directly to the THO Office, through the Combined Federal Campaign or the State Employees Campaign
