| Program or Service: | Receiving: For numerous reasons, owners relinquish their pets to the Humane Society. The Humane Society takes in approximately 2,500 unwanted dogs and cats a year. Animals are evaluated for their health and temperament, and if adoptable, accepted and place in the Pet Adoption Center.
Pet Adoptions: The Humane Society places healthy and temperamentally sound animals in responsible new homes where they will receive quality and stable lifelong care. Each adopted animal receives a Health Care Package that includes: neutering, de-worming, bath & dip, grooming (if needed), testing (heartworm, feleuk/FIV), bordetella, and a rabies vaccination. The Pet Adoption Center isseven days a week and 365 day a year.
Humane Education Program: The humane education program teaches children and adults about people and pets. Presentations and educational support materials include the services of the Humane Society, responsible pet ownership, pet needs, safety for and around animals, pet overpopulation, and prevention of cruelty. Presentations are conducted by appointment at the Humane Society, along with a tour, or at any requested location.
Obedience Training: Courses geared to both puppies and adult dogs are taught at the Humane Society and cover puppy socialization, basic to advanced obedience training, and behavior problem counseling. Each month, the Humane Society offers a free two-hour class that offers helpful obedience advice to dog owners.
Community Outreach: The Humane Society promotes animal awareness within the community by providing educational materials on request, dispensing materials from booths at community events, and collaborating with the media to produce public service announcements regarding the humane treatment of animals. This includes the STOPP (Stop the OverPopulation of Pets) Campaign that educates on the need to spay/neuter. An Animal Resource Library is also available at the Humane Society for community use.
Pet Loss Support Group: The support group offers an environment of understanding and compassion, meeting on the last Saturday of each month from 10:00-11:30 am at the Humane Society.
Volunteer Opportunities: Opportunities for volunteering at the Humane Society are available in all areas of operation. Volunteers must attend an orientation and an adoption center training session.
Neutering Rebate: The neutering rebate program rebates $5 per male cat and $8 per female cat neutered by a veterinarian in Austin and Travis County (only 2 cats per household). It does not apply to animals that are adopted from and neutered by the humane Society or other animal shelter. Forms are available at the Humane Society and through Animal Rights Kinship.
Foster Care Program: A specially trained group of volunteers provide temporary homes for puppies, kittens, animals needing rehabilitation, and adult animals.
B.R.A.T.T. (Behavior, Receiving, Adoption Training Team): A group of devoted volunteers and staff members that participate in an on-going training course designed to increase dog adoptability and promote long-term placement.
Special Teams: The Special Teams program offers individuals from facilities such as Texas School for the Blind, Texas School for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, Exceptional Employment Services, Girl and Boy Scouts, Turman House of the Texas Youth Commission, and others the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the work force. Persons with special needs perform janitorial services, maintenance work, and animal care in exchange for enhanced life and work skills, and a sense of community involvement and accomplishment. |
| Outcomes: | The programs offered by the Humane Society reach over 24,000 men women and children in the Austin metropolitan area a year. Many will visit our Pet Adoption Center this year to find a companion animal, relinquish an unwanted pet, obtain information concerning animal care, attend a Pet Loss Support Group session, or accompany their dog to obedience training classes. Through a collaborative program with Purina Pet Foods, the Humane Society waives adoption fees to the elderly for companion pets. And, last year, approximately 2500 children participated in the shelter's Humane Education program and learned about responsible care and treatment of animals. As a no-kill shelter, the Humane Society is a key participant in the No-Kill Millennium plan, a resolution passed by the city of Austin and Travis county in 1997, which seeks to end the euthanasia of adoptable animals by 2003. Partnering with the city-run, tax-funded Town Lake Animal Shelter, the Humane Society has committed to increasing by 500 the number of animals taken in at its facility each year of the 5-year plan. In 1999, the Humane Society achieved a 99% success rate, and gave more than 2,280 animals a second chance at life. |
