| Charity Description |
| Mission: | SETON’s mission is to care for and improve the health of those we serve, with a special concern for the sick and the poor. We are called to be a sign of God’s unconditional love for all and believe that all persons by their creation are endowed with dignity. SETON continues the Catholic tradition of service established by our founders: St. Vincent de Paul, St. Louise deMarillac and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. |
| Program or Service: | The SETON Healthcare Network is the leading provider of healthcare services in Central Texas, serving more than a quarter million patients each year. The SETON Healthcare Network incorporates seven hospitals, three community clinics for the poor, regional services for Central Texas such as a Level 2 Trauma Center, and a community wellness education program. SETON’s facilities serve 14 counties in Central Texas.
As Austin’s only not-for-profit hospital system, SETON serves as the region’s safety-net healthcare provider. SETON cares for all patients in need, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay for treatment. In 1999, SETON exceeded Texas charity care requirements. SETON’s charity care and community benefit contribution was $66.3 million, almost 40 percent more than the year before. The increase was based upon such factors as SETON meeting the service needs of outlying communities, continuing reductions in government funding of healthcare services, and, despite an era of economic prosperity for many, a growing need for services among our community’s less privileged.
The SETON Healthcare Network is committed to using available resources wisely and creatively to make the biggest impact on the quality of life in the community. Recently, governmental and political entities have shown a willingness to consider innovative approaches to financing and delivering health care. For example, within the last five years, the City of Austin has turned over operation of two city hospitals to the SETON Healthcare Network, and the Austin Independent School District has contracted with SETON to provide comprehensive student health services. By forging links with these and other area service providers, local school district educators, parents, local groups and businesses, SETON explores innovative ways to leverage common resources and provide the best care possible.
SETON also partners with organizations such as SafePlace, Any Baby Can, Manos de Cristo Dental Clinic, The Sustainable Food Center, LifeWorks, The Austin Project and Communities in Schools. Through community-wide coalitions like the Indigent Care Collaboration, Health Partnership 2000 and the Community Action Network, and by the Network’s Community Giving program, SETON supports inter-agency cooperation on complex community issues.
The Seton Fund provides the philanthropic structure for the SETON Healthcare Network, raising funds to construct new facilities, purchase advanced medical equipment, provide charity care and fund endowments. More than 300 community volunteers participating in two volunteer support groups -- the Seton Development Board, with associate groups in Giddings, Highland Lakes, Horseshoe Bay, Lago Vista, Lakeway, La Grange and Lexington; and the Elizabeth Ann Seton Board -- assist The Seton Fund in its fundraising mission, raising thousands of dollars for SETON programs each year through donations, special events and other projects.

| Outcomes: | SETON’s commitment to healthcare excellence is recognized across the United States. SETON is one of only three integrated healthcare networks in Texas accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations in 1998. SETON earned accreditation with commendation, the highest level awarded by the nation’s oldest and largest certifying body. For four years in a row (1995 to 1999), Seton Medical Center has been named the Quality Leader for Central Texas in a syndicated consumer study by the National Research Corporation. The study found that when Austinites require medical attention, 60 percent prefer SETON healthcare facilities. |
| Events Hosted: | The Seton Fund sponsors two annual galas each year -- one in the fall hosted by the Seton Development Board and another in the spring hosted by the Elizabeth Ann Seton Board. The Seton Fund also organizes numerous other special events throughout the year to benefit the SETON Healthcare Network. |
| How to Donate: | The Seton Fund accepts gifts of cash; stock; charitable bequests through wills and living trusts; beneficiary designations through life insurance, retirement and investment accounts; real estate; and other assets.
