| Charity Description |
| Mission: | - Recruit and train volunteers for work in pet therapy, and promote the Human/Animal bond through pet visitation programs.
- Work with health care professionals in institutions where pet therapy would enhance quality of life for patients.
- Provide institutionalized patients an opportunity for bonding with pets through weekly visits.
- Promote and publicize pet therapy through workshops, seminars, lectures, and discussion groups in order to elevate public awareness on the importance of pet therapy. |
| Program or Service: | - Providing pet/volunteer teams for visitation programs in health care facilities/institutions where there is no other contact with pets.
- Demonstrate the health benefits (both mental and physical) that are being derived by a regular weekly interaction with pets.
- Provide residents/patients a demonstrative outlet for expressing their love through holding and cuddling an animal that will reciprocate with an equal expression of affection.
- Pet therapy programs provide a more "home-like" environment and "humanize" an institutional setting. |
| Outcomes: | Results:
- Reduced stress and agitation levels brought about by the addition of Pet therapy programs. The pets create a more normal, "home-like" atmosphere enforcing patient treatment progression.
- Improved vocal and motor skills due to inter-action, both physically and mentally, with the pets.
- Improved memory retention and decision-making skills by focusing on communication with pets and volunteers through bi-weekly visits.
- Increased volunteer participation due to seminars, discussion groups, etc., which highlight the plight of the institutionalized.
- Improved quality of life for ALL institutionalized people.
Desired Community Impacts:
- A less sterile, more "home-like" environment to decrease patients' fears, and aid progress in treatment.
- Elevated public awareness of the most forgotten members of our society; the institutionalized. Change attitudes of those in society with a misconception of distrust/fear of MHMR patients.
- Increased interest by other volunteer organizations/civic groups in serving the institutionalized.
Populations and Communities Served:
- Institutionalized persons of all ages, but primarly the elderly in nursing facilities.
- Resident Mental Health and Mental Retardation clients.
- Others include hopitalized rehabilitation patients and severly handicapped children. |
