Charity Description
Mission: TreeFolks is a volunteer, community-based non-profit organization dedicated to the planting and care of trees in the Austin and Central Texas area. TreeFolks was formed in 1989, obtained its 501 (c)(3) status in 1990, and is governed by a fifteen member board. TreeFolks’ mission is to promote community partnerships in the renewal, restoration and care of the greater Austin area urban forest through public tree plantings and education. We invite businesses, schools, government, citizen groups and individuals to join us in creating a healthier environment and enhancing the quality of urban life.
Program or Service: †† City Shade is our large scale high impact volunteer plantings. TreeFolks usually teams up with a municipality or neighborhood association for these plantings. The number of trees planted at one of these public tree plantings ranges from 75 to 300 trees.

†† CommuniTrees is our tree grant program available to schools planning tree planting projects. This program offers trees, expertise on design, tree planting and provides tree planting supervisors and education programs. The school provides the design, two year maintenance and the planting volunteers.

†† Citizen Forester is an educational program to train volunteers in all aspects of urban and community forestry. Curriculum includes tree planting techniques, minor tree pruning techniques and instruction on maintenance necessary for urban trees. Participants in this program attend 12 hours of instruction and “hands-on” practice and agree to participate in one major tree planting sponsored by TreeFolks.

†† Urban Orchard Project is a project that places fruit and nut trees in public spaces in low income neighborhoods. Participants are placed in a training program to teach them the basics of organic fruit and nut tree care, harvesting techniques, value added products and some simple marketing strategies.

†† ReLeaf Week is the kickoff for our tree planting season. During the month of October, radio stations and other media sources, promote tree care and announce the beginning of the tree planting season. ReLeaf Week includes at least one major public tree planting. This is analogous to Austin’s version of Arbor Day.

†† Speakers Bureau is part of our outreach to the local community. Volunteers and staff speak on a variety of topics including information about TreeFolks, tree planting, care and identification, emergency management (tornado damage, etc.) to any groups requesting assistance from us.
Outcomes: Who are our members or constituents?
TreeFolks has a strong citizen volunteer base of thousands from the greater Austin metropolitan area who have participated in tree plantings and educational programs. Currently, four board committees assist with the organization’s programs and events.

What is the role of our organization in promoting urban forestry in the community?
TreeFolks mission is achieved by hosting volunteer tree plantings along roadways, in parks, at schools and other public areas. Education is a major emphasis of TreeFolks. We stress the importance of planting, and care of our valuable urban forest by planting trees with school children, publishing a tree growing guide, teaching an extensive Citizen Forester course, hosting public seminars, publishing a quarterly newsletter, and staffing information booths.
Events Hosted: Tree2000: On November 4, 2000, TreeFolks volunteers will be planting 2000 trees in a single day. On the first Saturday in November we will gather 2000 volunteers to plant these trees across the Austin Metropolitan Area, setting a record for the single largest planting we’ve done in a day, as well as the single largest urban tree planting in all of Texas.

The planting is designed to be a regional planting, which to date includes the municipalities of Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Lago Vista, Travis County, LCRA and the City of Austin. We are anticipating starting the plantings at sites in the North and South simultaneously and working our way to the end. Volunteers will move to the next site as they are completed. Mayors and dignitaries from all the participating regions are invited to attend and plant the 2000th tree.

This event brings attention to the benefits of public tree planting. Planting trees raises awareness of everyone’s ability to take an active role in creating a more livable urban environment.
