| Charity Description |
| Mission: | To eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. |
| Program or Service: | The Austin Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in late 1999 to spread the life-saving message of early detection and to support breast cancer screening and diagnostic programs in Central Texas.
Approximately 75 percent of net proceeds from the Komen Austin Race for the Cure® and other fundraising activities remain in the community to fund breast cancer education and screening programs in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. Komen Austin places a special emphasis on programs that provide breast cancer education and screening to medically underserved populations, and we are working toward the goal of offering treatment programs for those who have limited options if they are diagnosed with breast cancer.
Komen Austin shares the remaining 25 percent of local net proceeds with the Komen Foundation to support its innovative national research grant program.
|
| Outcomes: | The Komen Austin Affiliate conducts a detailed community needs assessment every two years to determine existing gaps in local breast health and breast cancer services in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. This assessment is a valuable tool that aids Komen Austin in determining the grants it will support. The Affiliate awards grants to service providers through a peer-reviewed process that is consistent with the Foundation’s national standards and funds them with a portion of the proceeds generated by the Komen Austin Race for the Cure® and other fundraising events.
In 2002, the Komen Austin Affiliate awarded 12 local grants totaling $275,000 to support breast cancer education and screening programs, as well as programs to assist breast cancer patients in and around the Austin area:
--The Seton Fund received $49,852 for its Emergency Relief Fund that helps pay for medications, rent, utilities, and transportation for breast cancer patients.
--The Seton Fund received $32,795 that will be used to support the Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Outreach Program.
--The American Cancer Society and the People’s Community Clinic were jointly granted $24,555 that will benefit their Getting a Mammogram Could Save Your Life Project.
--The Hill Country Medical Ministries received $12,307 that will be used for breast cancer screening and education.
--The Breast Cancer Resource Center was granted $31,404 for a program aimed at assisting minority and underserved people through breast cancer education and support.
--A grant of $11,870 was awarded to the Women's Wellness Center at the University of Texas School of Nursing.
--The Seton Fund received a $15,000 grant to support a breast cancer diagnostic work-up treatment program.
--The Breast Cancer Research Center was awarded an additional $31,799 that will support the breast cancer Education Director and programs administered by that position.
--A grant of $4,030 has been awarded to the Seton Fund for its program that supports breast cancer lymphadema treatment.
--The Breast Cancer Resource Center also received a grant of $25,828 that will assist the funding of its Volunteer Director and Programs.
--The Round Rock Health Clinic was awarded a grant of $6,500 to help fund its program, Las Promotadoras de Salud.
