Charity Description
Mission: The mission of Bat Conservation International is to preserve and restore bats and their habitats throughout the world.

We are committed to:

Teaching humankind about the importance of bats and eradicating ignorance and superstition about these gentle and essential animals through education;

Preserving critical bat habitats, ranging from rain forests and deserts, and encouraging others to join in our conservation efforts;

Advancing scientific knowledge about bats and the ecosystems that rely on them, through research that determines the status of these animals, documents their values, and assesses their needs.

Facilitating win-win solutions for bats and people, using a non-confrontational approach.

Outcomes: BCI has played a key role in gaining permanent protection for a majority of North America's most important remaining bat caves, has sponsored research that has documented the keystone role of bats in major ecosystems, has conducted research essential to greatly improved forest management, has saved millions of bats from being accidentally buried during mine safety closures, has led successful efforts to establish the first national park in U.S. history to protect a tropical rain forest; has supported training for graduate students who have completed advanced degrees and become influential proponents for responsible resource use; and has trained leaders from more than 25 federal and state agencies in bat management and conflict avoidance techniques.
Events Hosted: The "Free-tail-Free-For-ALL"

A special event for children, co-hosted by the Austin American-Statesman at the Congress Avenue Bridge each summer. See BCI's web site for updates on the next scheduled event. www.batcon.org
