| Mission: | The Council on At-Risk Youth (CARY) is dedicated to helping youth prevent violence,drug abuse, and delinquency through public information, training and management of violence prevention programs with groups of high risk youth.

| Program or Service: | CARY sponsors The "PeaceMakersYouth Violence Prevention program" with a 2 hour "violence prevention" workshop for high risk youth placed at the Austin ISD Alternative Learning Center and assigned to in school suspension at four AISD middle schools. A Center for Disease Control and Prevention "best practice" curriculum is used with topics of discussion on 1)anger triggers & responses, 2) handling criticism, 3) conflict resolution, 4) making positive choices, and 5) aggression & bullying. |
| Outcomes: | The " PeaceMakers Youth Violence Prevention Program" has evaluation results showing 80% of 155 participants at the AISD Alternative Learning report learning new skills to avert violence and developing new attitudes about the seriousness of and consequenses of violent behavior. |
| Events Hosted: | the PeaceMakers Violence Prevention program has been offered to 140 youth residing in the high risk neighborhoods in South Austin with sponsorship coming from the Travis County Juvenile ProbationDepartment. Class presentations on violence and crime prevention have been offered at Lanier High School and Burnett Middle School. CARY also conducts service learning projects with students assigned to disciplinary alternative education programs at Georgetown, Lockhart, and Luling. |
