| Charity Description |
| Mission: | Texas Audubon Society is the state affiliate of the National Audubon Society, whose mission for more than 100 years has been to protect birds and other wildlife and to preserve and restore wildlife habitat. Texas Audubon Society promotes scientifically sound state conservation policy, educates the public on bird, wildlife, and habitat issues, oversees 14,000 acres of land in Texas, and supports the efforts of more than 20 local Audubon chapters.
Texas Audubon Society is dedicated to the conservation of birds and other wildlife, protecting habitat and natural diversity, and providing environmental education, observation and appreciation activities throughout our state. |
| Program or Service: | Science-based education.
Coastal conservation: In all, more than thirty islands along the Texas Coast are home to 30 species of colonial waterbirds, several of which are considered endangered or threatened. Our coastal sanctuaries host the largest Reddish Egret and Roseate Spoonbill colonies in the world, along with 96 percent of Texas' endangered Brown Pelicans. The majority of Texas' colonial waterbirds depend on sanctuary islands for their survival.
Junior Audubon: for more information on our education program for kids, please contact Penny Hartwell at .
Sabal Palm Sanctuary and Audubon Center in Brownsville: The sanctuary contains the remnant of the original native Sabal Palm forest that used to cover the Rio Grande River region. The bi-national education program is designed to educate school children and families on both side of the border about the region’s unique natural and cultural heritage. The program also highlights habitat restoration in the border region, as diminishing habitat is one of the area's greatest threats to wildlife.
Important Bird Areas: Because 97% of Texas land is privately owned, the IBA program focuses on reaching private landowners. The goal of the IBA program is to identify and document the most important bird habitats in Texas, then work with landowners to conserve these vital habitat areas.
Chapter and Volunteer Support: Audubon Texas oversees more than 20 local Audubon chapters and hundreds of volunteers, who assist in the education of Texas' citizens and conservation of our wildlife.
