| Mission: | Caritas of Austin provides a safety net for our community's working poor, homeless and legal refugees that meets their emergency basic needs and inspires and assists their achievement of economic self-sufficiency. |
| Program or Service: | FOOD SERVICES - Approximately 63,000 lunches served in the Loaves & Fishes Community Kitchen and at least 3,135 two-day supplies of groceries from the pantry.
REFUGEE SERVICES - Reception, resettlement and employment assistance benefiting at least 400 legal refugees.
SOCIAL SERVICES - More than 12,500 adults and children will benefit from basic needs assistance (rent, utilities, clothing, food, transportation, medical needs). Case management will build self-reliance for 205 households. |
| Outcomes: | Results: People at-risk of homelessness and hunger can provide for their basic needs and therefore fully participate in work, school and community life. Legal refugees are welcomed to the community and become self-sufficient. Homeless and low-income households that want to gain skills and break the cycle of poverty participate in long-term case management.
Caritas serves the Austin/Travis County area. Our programs benefit the working poor, the homeless and legal refugees. Caritas serves more women (62%) than men (38%). Most clients (92%) are working age (18 to 55) with dependants in the home. The ethnic mix is: African-American (42%), Anglo (27%), Hispanic (27%), Other (3%) and Asian (1%).
The most significant determinant of client eligibility is income level. The Community Support Program assists households whose income is at or less than 150% of the Federal Poverty Income Guideline (FPIG). At 100%, those levels are $1,421 per month for a family of four. Sixty-seven percent of those served in Fiscal Year 2000 (FY00) earned less than 50% of the FPIG. |
