| Mission: | The mission of Meals on Wheels and More is to nourish and enrich the lives of the homebound and other people in need through services that promote dignity and independent living. |
| Program or Service: | Currently, Meals on Wheels and More offers five programs to homebound elderly and disabled people in the greater Austin area:
Meals on Wheels: This daily meal delivery program serves more than 1,600 clients each day. In 2000, we cooked and delivered 461,826 meals to clients in the Greater Austin area.
Care Calls: This program provides our lonelier clients with some additional human contact and caring. Volunteers make reassuring phone calls to clients each week to check on their health and provide friendship. This also helps Meals on Wheels and More monitor the clients in order to better serve them.
Handy Wheels: This program matches volunteers with clients who need minor home safety repairs such as smoke alarms, door locks, bathroom safety bars and new light bulbs. Handy Wheels takes place one Saturday each month.
Groceries to Go: This program provides grocery shopping assistance to our homebound clients. Our volunteers do the shopping for clients who can no longer shop for themselves.
Medi Wheels: Our Volunteers drive homebound clients to and from medical appointments, often including a stop at the pharmacy. |
| Outcomes: | Meals on Wheels and More has been serving the Austin area since 1972, when we began with 8 volunteers cooking in church kitchens to serve 29 clients. As a United Way partner, our programs have expanded to include more than 2,000 clients and 3,600 volunteers, creating a true community partnership. We have expanded into southern Williamson County and are also partnering with Round Rock United Way to bring our services to clients in that area.
As the need for our services is growing, so is Meals on Wheels and More. We have purchased a new facility which will quadruple our kitchen capability when in full operation.
In 1999, Meals on Wheels and More was voted "Best Community Program" by the readers of the Austin Chronicle. This is a tribute to the positive effect we've had on the community, and the good will we've created. Meals on Wheels and More continues to be one of the most respected organizations in the Austin area, and we are continuously working to improve the quality of our services. |
| Events Hosted: | Each year, Meals on Wheels and More hosts the Austin Community Keepsake Award Gala Benefit. The Gala, which is our major fundraising event, honors members of the community who have contributed to the forward momentum of Austin through their visions and voices. This has become our signature event, and has raised more than $500,000 since its inception in 1996. Honorees include Roberta Crenshaw, Eddie Safady, Gene Fondren, Governor Ann Richards and Hon. Jake and Beryl Pickle. |
